About Red Current Distro

Red Current Distro provides radical leftist literature to the community in so-called Anchorage, Alaska.

We publish zines, pamphlets, infocards, and other items that are distributed for free as well as selling zines, books, stickers, patches, tote bags, and shirts, that are made with work from local artists.

What is a zine?

Zines (pronounced ZEEn, like the last syllable of "magazine") are self published, DIY print booklets. They come in a variety of different forms and can contain anything the maker chooses. Seriously, anything.

Have a favorite recipe?

Take pictures or illustrate your process and put the recipe in a zine.

What are the 10 best things you've seen while hiking?

Write down your experiences & share them in a zine.

Is there a musician or album that changed your life?

A book?

How about a piece of art or incredible meal?

Write it down, put it in the zine, share it with others.

What is a Distro?

Distro (pronounced DISS-trow) is a shortened version of the word "distribution" and is commonly used by people in DIY print publication to refer to a person or group that distributes zines. The zines may be made by others or by the distro person/group themselves.

In the case of Red Current Distro, it's a combination of zines made by others & offered for free distribution as well as zines made by Red Current Distro. Red Current Distro's own zines tend to cover issues that are locally-focused or topics that aren't well-covered by other available sources.

Who runs Red Current Distro?

Right now, Red Current Distro is run primarily by one person. Kat (they/them) is a queer, Anchorage-based activist, organizer, artist, & poet with a passion for political education. They began Red Current Distro in the early spring of 2025 but they've been reading, collecting, distributing, & making zines since they were a teenager. Their first zines (lost to time but fondly remembered) were fanzines about local musicians & punk scene. These days the DIY punk spirit is still with Kat but they like to spend their free time reading at home rather than mixing it up in the moshpit.

Who Funds Red Current Distro?

Red Current Distro's free distribution is largely self-funded by Kat but a growing number of incredibly generous community members have contributed donations that keep this project sustainable.

While donations to sustain this work are always welcome, they are not expected. Please only send donations if you feel called to do so and can do so comfortably.

Donations can be made at ko-fi.com/redcurrentdistro

You can also send your donation to any of the amazing organizations doing incredible work to make our strengthen our community. If you would like suggestions, email us.

Where is RCD?

You can usually find us at protests, rallies, & political demonstrations, & at events organized with the Mutual Aid Network of Anchorage or Stand Up Alaska. We try to post updates about upcoming events where Red Current Distro will be on bluesky & instagram.

What about a
Zine Library?

Red Current Distro did seed a zine library at The Commons Cafe in Wasilla but it is not currently being stocked. We are open to finding another spot to stock a zine library however we are notoriously bad at following up on things.

Keep bugging us about it.

Can RCD provide zines at your event?

Depending on the event, probably!

Contact us via email, bluesky, or instagram and we can work out the details!

What's in the future for Red Current Distro?

Over the last year, we've had many conversations with our neighbors about the needs of our community. Though Anchorage has some beloved independent booksellers, we still need the kind of community hub that fuels the fight for a better future. We hope to eventually open a brick & mortar bookstore that acts as just such a space.
